Behind the Motel at PlayPenn 2014

4/1/2014

I'll be spending July in Philadelphia developing my play Behind the Motel at the 2014 PlayPenn summer conference. This play was previously developed in 2013 at Erik Ehn's annual silent retreat in Texas, which famously asks its participants to draft an entire play over the course of ten days. (I managed to do this, barely, after some hand-wringing and empty afternoons.)

Behind the Motel is a story about renewing our faith in humanity, and in the ones we love. Mary runs a tight ship at the motel she owns in southern Arkansas, a place she has spent years turning into a home for her son, Christopher, and her boyfriend, Burney. But when Mary's trust is betrayed, some old wounds are opened, and she doesn't know whom to blame. Mary soon discovers that mending her present might involve tying up some loose ends of her past.
