Utility wins 2016 Yale Drama Series Award

3/28/2016

Utility was chosen to receive the Yale Drama Series Award this year, which includes a $10,000 prize, publication by Yale Press, and a staged reading at Lincoln Center Theater.

I got the phone call a couple days after the Amoralists production ended, and I couldn't remember which script I submitted last summer (apply and forget is my submission method). I had to call back and ask them, and I'm so glad it turned out to be Utility, a quietly feminist play whose story rejects the male gaze by its very existence.

It's also the latest in a string of plays by women that have won this award, and it is notable that both runners-up this year are women, in a blind competition judged by a male writer.
